Filming for BMW @ 35th America’s Cup

It’s tough when a colleague asks you to fly out to Bermuda for 2 weeks and do some filming for BMW, but someones got to do it… even if it is 30 degree’s with 95% humidity… the views are awful too!

The America’s Cup is one of the oldest competitions in the history of sport, with a trophy that’s 168 years old, .. staggering!

A producer friend of gP’s needed a director/cameraman/editor to help shoot and edit multiple social media films for BMW in the lead up to the final weekend of the America’s Cup competition, a showdown between Team Oracle USA and Emirates Team New Zealand.

The video content we created would be broadcast via BMW’s social media channels, both BMW and BMW Yachtsport.

We’d also shoot lots of corporate b-roll for BMW’s archives and future video requirements.

BMW Facebook videos

Over the course of 5 days we shot 3 videos in total (and filmed a whole to more B-Roll.) Our biggest challenges were finding location that could yield frames with no other cars in them. On an island 22 miles long this is rather difficult! (we ended up shutting roads and asking special permission from the nature reserves!).. and dealing with the heat, humidity and unpredictable weather!

Fortunately the entire crew were amazing and we managed to get all of our content filmed and edited without too much drama, and plenty of smiles.

BMW were very happy and as a supplier, thats the best you can hope to achieve.

Great crews lead to great videos

When you’re filming for BMW on a long shoot day like this, it all comes down to the crew working well as a team, and this was one of the best crews I’ve ever worked with.

A massive, hugely deserved shout out goes to the team from BMW and BMW Yachtsport and everyone involved at America’s Cup. John Singleton gets a special mention for his dedicated producing and incredible aerial shots as does Andrew Kirkpatrick and the team from INTO Bermuda, Jacin Lowe for his B-CAM work and Jeff Gaumer for amazing sound.

Obligatory celebrity selfie

Another special shout out goes to Clare Balding, who wasn’t part of our crew, but the wonderful BBC presenter had the time to pose with me for this glorious selfie…oooosh!!!
